Holidays on a sheep farm in the Karoo / South Africa

Experience a breathtaking wideness and unique sunsets...
farm holidays South Africa

With a glass of wine in your hand you are settling back on one of the red shimmering hills of the Karoo. You are watching the sun, which is visibly approaching the distant horizon. Far away you see a dust cloud, that must be caused by a car. Slowly the sun disappears behind the horizon and during the next minutes you watch a fantastic play of colours in the sky...

Pure South African Karoo...

For visitors of South Africa, who would like to get to know the semi-desert north of Cape Town, we offer a family run sheep farm in the Karoo with very comfortable guest rooms. You are in very good hands here and you can participate in the life of a farmer`s family. Your hosts are a german-south african couple with their three kids, who grow up bilingual (german – cape dutch). All of them are always happy to have guests at their farm – kids are very welcome as well!

There are two ways of spending the holidays on the farm. Either you chose the “relax-holidays” and organize your days the way you like to or you book the „working-sheep-holidays“ and participate in the everyday working life on a sheep farm. The work includes (always depending on the season) rounding up the sheep, counting, vaccinating, shearing and deworming them, controlling the watering places, reparing fences or caring for the lambs. But the fun isn’t missed out and there is still enough time to relax! Riders can spent some working time in the saddle in the context of the working-sheep-progrm (at least twice a week); possible tasks might be controlling the watering places and fences, searching missing animals or checking young lambs.

A stay on the farm generally includes full board. Discover a german-south african cuisine with homemade marmelade, freshly baked bread, fruit and vegetables from the farm, eggs from the own chicken as well as meat produced here. Furthermore the farm is equipped with an own spring, whose crystal clear water was tested and classified as drinking water.

There is a dam (natural swimming pool) and a concrete tennis court at your disposal. Furthermore you have the possibility of taking riding lessons or to go for a ride into the surrounding area. Very popular is the jeep-tour in the evening to experience the legendary sunset or the excursion onto the bushman’ s hill with a barbecue and an overnight stay.

Besides the horses there are more animals looking forward to your visit: a dog, cats, donkeys and certainly lots of sheep!

In the surroundings live numerous wild animals like antelopes, porcupines, aardvarks, turtles, jackals, eagles, vultures, rabbits, kudus, long-tailed monkeys and dassies, which are similar to the marmots. In addition there are more than 200 kinds of birds to discover!

Possible destinations for excursions are the towns Loxton, Fraserburg or Beaufort West. Near Beaufort West the Karoo national park is located, in which you can see roaming zebras, rhinos, ostriches and monkeys.

Your host Nicole is always happy to help you with more tips for excursions!

Location of the farm / distances:

  • Loxton: 30 km
  • Fraserburg: 70 km
  • Beaufort West 150 km
  • Cape Town (nearest international airport): 600 km
